VERTIGO

Vertigo

Vertigo is a sensation which can range from feeling off-balance to spinning sensation. If you have these dizzy spells, you might feel like you are spinning or that the world around you is spinning. Vertigo is often caused by an inner ear problem. Some of the most common causes include:

  • BPPV arises when microscopic calcium carbonate crystals are dislodged and gather in the inner ear. Head and body movements related to gravity are sent to the brain by the inner ear.
  • Meniere’s disease. Fluid buildup and pressure changes may cause this inner ear condition. Vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss can result.
  • Vestibular neuritis/labyrinthitis. Inner ear infection causes this (usually viral). Infection in the inner ear inflames balance-related nerves.

People with vertigo typically describe it as feeling like they are:

  • Spinning
  • Tilting
  • Swaying
  • Unbalanced
  • Pulled to one direction

Treatment of vertigo requires assessing the pathophysiology or the cause of the condition. Once the cause is determined the medical practitioner can plan the treatment. Depending on the condition, it may require medication or dietary changes. Other conditions may be managed through a specific form of physical therapy known as vestibular rehabilitation. Vestibular rehabilitation uses various maneuvers and exercises to help reduce symptoms. Although a significant number of patients get relief using anti-vertigo medications, these can make you drowsy and increase your risk of falls and therefore it is always important to talk to your medical practitioner on the effects of such medications.

Role of Audiologists
