EUSTACHIAN TUBE FUNCTION TEST

Overview

Eustachian tube function test usually entails a history of patient symptoms and objective measurements of eustachian tube through use of Tympanometer which provides the option to perform this special test. In the most basic sense, Eustachian tube function can be assessed with conventional tympanometry. If the tympanogram peaks at >-150 daPa middle ear pressure ET function is considered abnormal, although it may not indicate chronic dysfunction. Conversely, an absence of negative pressure does not necessarily imply normal ET function.

To perform the Eustachian tube function intact test, there is a series of three tympanograms performed. The first test involves a regular tympanogram.  If the tympanogram is normal and the pressure is increased to +400 daPa, have the patient swallow several times or perform a Toynbee (hold nose and swallow) procedure, and redo the tympanogram. If ET function is normal you will see a negative shift in pressure. Then, pressurize to -400 daPa swallow several times or perform a Valsalva (hold nose and blow) procedure, and redo the tympanogram. If ET function is normal you will see a positive shift in pressure. The total shift in pressure should be at least 15 – 20 daPa.
